ABOUT THE WORK Autor de marinhas, Cristino pretende eleger o sentimento romântico no entendimento da Natureza, acentuando o dramatismo de um naufrágio observado na escuridão da noite, onde se destaca um mar revolto. Trata-se de um acontecimento trágico e real, provavelmente recorrendo às visões de quadros como o Radeau de la Méduse, de Géricault, de 1818 – 19 e o Naufrágio do S.Pedro de Alcântara, de J. Pillement, de 1786, que certamente conhecera. Uma inovadora qualidade técnica de representação do movimento da ondulação, em realísticas transparências, apesar do aspecto cenográfico de uma iluminação em “óculo” romântico, que se projecta desde um adensamento de nuvens até ao mar e areia, liga esta marinha à sua preocupação de captação da “verdade”, expressa numa atitude romântica angustiante. Tal como no quadro de Pillement, pequenas figuras agitam-se e gesticulam nos rochedos da praia, onde o acidente se sobrepõe à habitual exuberância cromática e provoca uma contenção de castanhos e azuis acinzentados de uma paleta fechada. A emergência da situação, de um dramatismo verídico e impressionante, o carácter cenográfico que destaca a angústia da cena, a narratividade que a envolve, os efeitos de sombras por oposição a um círculo iluminado, e o qualificado tratamento da cena marítima, integram esta pintura numa manifesta atitude romântica que o demarca da sua geração, relacionando-o com o sentimento dramático da pintura alemã e de Friedrich.
