Description
Suomi: Kokkolalainen talonpoika ja hylkeenpyytäjä Matts Kankkonen (1815–1899), joka ampumataidot takasivat suomalaisten vapaaehtoisten voiton Krimin sodan ns. Halkokarin kahakassa vuonna 1854. Hänestä tilattiin keisarillisella määräyksellä tämä muotokuva, joka sijoitettiin Helsingin keisarilliseen palatsiin (nykyinen Presidentinlinna), missä maalaus edelleen sijaitsee. Maalauksen taustana on Halkokari ja siellä sijainneet Kokkolan porvarien varastot, joita suomalaiset taistelussa suojelivat. Kankkosella on kuvassa keisarin myöntämä Pyhän Yrjön hopeamitali ja kaksi keisarin lahjoittamaa kivääriä.
