В рукописном списке Зичи на с. 161, № 282 значится рисунок: “L’antichambre de S.M.L’Emperieur a Tzarskoe Selo” (Передняя у императора в Царском Селе), который, несомненно, соответствует эрмитажной акварели. Рисунок легко узнаваем и в колоритном описании анонимного автора: “…фигура тупого негра-раба, держащего в руках курительный прибор для кальяна. Это прекрасная и удачная акварель”. Судя по дальнейшим словам автора, на выставке 1869 г. была представлена и парная композиция с фигурой красивой добродетельной рабыни, несущей своему владыке кофе и страдающей от его нескромных взглядов.
