La rapaz, representada con las alas abiertas en una representación muy naturalista, tiene bajo sus fuertes garras diversas presas. José del Castillo muestra su capacidad para la representación veraz de los objetos en un tema muy decorativo, inspirado en ciertas representaciones flamencas del siglo XVII. Cartón preparatorio para el tapiz de sobreventana de la “pieza de cámara del cuarto” del príncipe de Asturias, futuro Carlos IV, en El Escorial.
