Muhammad remporte plusieurs victoires militaires, dont celle de Badr sur les Mecquois, puis doit se battre à l'intérieur même de Médine, d'abord avec les "hypocrites" nouveaux convertis dont la tiédeur est une faiblesse pour la communauté, ensuite avec les tribus juives. Ces victoires assurées, Muhammad organise les règles de la nouvelle communauté, inspiré par les révélations qu'il reçoit.
