DescriptionNYT - Big British gun going to its position.jpg |
Photograph of a British heavy naval gun being moved on special trailer, Western Front. New York Times caption of 18 January 1918 reads : "Battery of British heavy field pieces and their crews on the roadside near Neuville Vitasse, British West Front." The caption about Neuville Vitasse (S.E. of Arras) would be for propaganda and deception purposes. In fact the gun appears to be a BL 7.5 inch Mk III naval gun from the decommissioned battleship HMS Swiftsure (1903), being moved into position along the coast in Flanders, 1917. It is being towed by a 105 horsepower Daimler-Foster tractor, and is on an 8-wheeled truck designed by Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon for moving 12 inch naval gun carriages, and built by Foster's. |
