Description |
English: This oil on canvas painting depicts a yacht captain (likely Edwin Dennison Morgan and his wife Elizabeth Moran Morgan) on an open-air 'veranda' on the stern of their steam yacht likely 'May'. The captain is portrayed rolling up yarn. His beautiful wife lounges and holds the string taut in one hand and the ball in the other. The couple's dog, a Spitz, is drawn watching the off-canvas water to the left with the curve of its tail poking up from the bottom of the canvas. Through the slats of the guard rail a frigate can be seen. A cloud of smoke at its flank indicates a recent firing, possibly in salute to indicate a celebration of sorts. The artist's signature can be seen, if obscured, in the bottom left corner. |
