JPEG file comment | CHAMPAIGNE, Philippe de
(b. 1602, Bruxelles, d. 1674, Paris) Ex Voto 1662 Oil on canvas, 165 x 229 cm Musée du Louvre, Paris In the 1640s Champaigne became deeply influenced by Jansenism, an austere Roman Catholic reform movement centered at Port-Royal. Thereafter he painted portraits of Jansenist leaders in a cool, restrained, rational French spirit. Outstanding is Ex Voto de 1662 (1662, Louvre), depicting his daughter, a Jansenist nun, cured of paralysis through prayer. The painting represents Mother-Superior Cathérine-Agnès Arnauld and Sister Cathérine de Sainte-Suzanne, the daughter of the artist.
