English: Pipe bowls were variously designed utilitarian and ceremonial objects. They were originally reserved for a courtly elite. The face of the male figure shows the stylistic features typical of the Grasslands, as also found in wood and bronze sculptures. The hand raised to the chin seems to be a gesture of respect to the king. The crescent-shaped mpelet cap with the jagged 'spear' motif shows that this is a representation of a high-ranking member of the court.
Deutsch: Pfeifenköpfe waren vielfältig gestaltete Gebrauchs- und Zeremonialgegenstände, die ursprünglich einer höfischen Elite vorbehalten waren. Das Gesicht der männlichen Figur zeigt die für das Grasland typischen Stilmerkmale, wie man sie auch in Holz- und Bronzeskulpturen findet. Die zum Kinn geführte Hand scheint eine Geste des Respekts gegenüber dem König zu sein. Die halbmondförmige mpelet-Mütze mit dem gezackten ‚Speermotiv‘ zeigt, dass es sich hier um die Darstellung eines hochrangigen Mitglieds des Hofes handelt. |

The estate of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, owned by the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation at the Brücke Museum, contains his collection of around 100 sculptures and objects with colonial backgrounds. The Brücke artist himself never travelled outside Europe and, to the best of current knowledge, bought these objects in the art trade and from private owners from the 1910s onwards. The collection includes ritual and everyday objects, alongside souvenirs for the Western market. The way they were perceived underwent changes: they came to be seen as objects of art and decoration. Little is known of their origins, the circumstances of their acquisition, or the historical and current importance of the objects. Most of them originate from Germany’s former colonies, thus referring directly to German Expressionists’ entanglements in the often unlawful appropriation of material culture in colonially occupied lands.
