Description
Nederlands: De Nederlandse marine-arts Pompe van Meerdervoort arriveert in 1857 in Japan om er les te geven in enkele belangrijke onderdelen van de geneeskunde. Hij slaagt er als eerste in binnen korte tijd een volledig Westerse geneeskundeopleiding op te zetten. In 1861 wordt in Nagasaki het eerste Westerse ziekenhuis van het land geopend waarbij Pompe van Meerdervoort een grote rol vervult.
English: In 1857, the Dutch naval doctor Pompe van Meerdervoort arrived in Japan to teach a number of major medical subjects. He succeeded in setting up the first complete Western medical training college. In 1861, the first Western Hospital was opened in Japan, where Pompe van Meerdervoort played an important role.
