The sitter was the brother of Alexander, 9th Earl of Leven and 6th Earl of Melville (1749-1820) (see lots 71 and 73), and of Lady Jane Leslie Melville (1753-1829), wife of John Belsches Wishart, later Stuart (1752-1821) (see lots 311 and 313).
