"This painting [...] ranks for its quality among the highest results of the portraiture of Cremona alongside what remains his absolute masterpiece in this field and one of the most beautiful portraits of our nineteenth century the Portrait of Nicola Massa from 1867 (Pavia, Musei Civici) [...] Our portrait, where the figure appears pervaded by the same intense sentimental atmosphere, is characterized by an equal thickness of the pictorial material, the result of a chromatic research initiated by the 16th century Falconiere (1859) and Un falconiere (1863), both at the Civic Gallery of Modern Art in Milan. His long stay in Venice between 1852 and 1859 was fundamental to this merit, an intense experience that can be found in the references to Tiziano portraitist clearly perceptible in the quick drafting, frayed and enlivened by spots of pure colors that seem to be rubbed with fingertips on the canvas. Cremona's value in this area and a research that took him far the risks of contemporary naturalism are well underlined by Carlo Dossi who, on the occasion of his presence at the Brera exhibition in 1873, noted: "It is a proof of the artistically kind soul of Tranquillo Cremona that oozes beauty from every image, portraits of him. It was always the artifice of the bad portraitists, to obtain the similarities, to exaggerate the defects of the originals, to make caricatures of them: the mediocre, then, copy the true, good and bad as it is: Cremona, on the other hand, chooses it, and therefore improves it. In other words, we mean that he leaves his defects to the original and does not pass on to the canvas if not the virtues. He does the truth as it should be: he makes portraits, which although they are very similar, are of interest to everyone, even though the originals are unknown, portraits, which, having overcome even the bile of the proposals they touch, are the future glory of the art galleries ". (Quoted in R. Bossaglia , Tranquillo Cremona. Catalog raisonné, with the contribution of G. Dainotti, Milan 1994, p. 222) The identity of this elegant young woman, who seems to hide her spleen under her bold plumed hat, remains mysterious for now, as the closed book that he holds with his gloved hand. But it seems that the artist, having chosen to immerse the image in a timeless atmosphere and pervaded by an extraordinary sentimental an idealized and distant femininity ".
