Le musée du Louvre, une création révolutionnaire.

L'idée d'installer les collections royales dans la Grande Galerie du Louvre, siège de l'Académie de peinture et de sculpture, prit corps dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle. L'action du directeur général des Bâtiments du roi, le comte d'Angiviller, et la création en 1784 d'un comité chargé d'organiser les collections permirent de faire avancer le projet. Mis en sommeil pendant la tourmente révolutionnaire, la confusion des biens de la Couronne avec ceux de la nation et la nécessité d'instruire le peuple rendirent cependant urgente sa création. Décrété officiellement le 19 septembre 1792, le Muséum central des arts ouvrit ses portes le 10 août 1793, jour anniversaire de la chute de la monarchie. Le peintre Hubert Robert participa activement à la réalisation du projet : de 1784 à 1792 puis de 1795 à 1802, il s'occupa des acquisitions et de l'agencement des collections.
