Object history |
Part of the collection of Mr Frederick William Lucas, F.L.S., F.Z.S. Lucas probably established his vast collection of osteological and ethnographical items over a significant period of time and from a wide range of sources, including taxidermists, sales rooms / auction houses and personal contacts. In 1922 Brighton Museum accepted offer of one year loan (from 19 Sept. 1922) of Lucas’ ‘Osteological and Ethnographical Collections’. Displayed in rooms 10, 12 and 13 (opens to public 25 November 1922) · 9 November 1925 – selection of ’96 items (but more specimens)’ removed by Lucas (other items appear to have been removed during period Sept. 1922 – Nov. 1925). Remaining items (and cases containing them which belonged to Lucas) offered to Museum as a gift ‘without condition or reservation’. Approx. 1,800 osteological and ethnographical items – logged as R.2778 in Museum’s accessions register Collections from the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now the Republic of Botswana, are the focus of the 2019 Making African Connections research project. |
