Object history

Donated to Brighton Museum by Wlliam S Proctor in 1935. A note in the accession register reads: 'Asked for further information, Mr Proctor replied, 9th Sept 1935: "A brother of mine, who has lived in South Africa for some years, gave me the beadwork when I was out there in 1912. He told me it had come from Bechuanaland, and that it had come into his possession, as far as I can recollect, about 1910."'

Collections from the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now the Republic of Botswana, are the focus of the 2019 Making African Connections research project.

Accession register describes three large brass rings hanging from the four pendants but only one is present in the photograph taken during the Africa review in 2013/14.
