Español: El lienzo muestra a Salomé, hija de la reina Herodias, sujetando con sus manos la bandeja con la cabeza del profeta Juan el Bautista, que según los Santos Evangelios murió decapitado por orden del rey Herodes Antipas tras haber prometido este ultimo a su hijastra Salomé que, si accedía a bailar ante él, le entregaría lo que deseara. Y al pedirle la joven que le entregara la cabeza del Bautista, el rey se mostró contrariado porque lo apreciaba, pero al final accedió a sus deseos y ordenó ejecutarlo, encargándose posteriormente sus discípulos de dar sepultura a su cadáver.
