Summary
[edit]The Savitsky-Golay algorithm is used a lot in chemometrics to differentiate signals which aren’t continuous.
This figure shows the Raman spectrum of cyclohexane (spectrum A). While applying the Savitsky-Golay smoothing filter, the fitted polynomial is differentiated. This results in spectrum B (first derivative) and spectrum C (second derivative). When using the Savitsky-Golay algorithm the signal is also smoothed a little bit (not shown).
