English: PIETRO DE ROSSI (RUSSIAN, 1761-1831)

Prince Sergey Saltykov, in blue and russet wool tartan cloak with elaborate gold and royal blue tassel closure, lined with another red, green and blue tartan, black dolman with elaborate frogging and tassels, russet waistcoat, white linen shirt with stand-collar, green silk cravat with patterned bow and matching shirt studs, short forward swept dark hair, his left arm leaning on a cerise velvet pillow; damask curtain and classicising background signed and dated 'P. de Rossi f: 1829' (lower right) on ivory rectangular, 4 1/8 x 4 1/16 in. (106 x 103 mm.), ormolu frame with concentric waterleaf and tongue and scroll and trefoil borders, elaborate foliate motifs and medallions adorning the spandrels, ornately scrolled and festooned frame wings

Provenance

The sitter's daughter, Anastasia Sergeyevna Saltykova (1810-1853), Imperial Russian lady-in-waiting and wife of Royal Norwegian Embassy Counsellor Christian Fredrik Jacob von Munthe af Morgenstierne (1806-1886). Their only daughter Alexandra Cathrine Henriette von Munthe af Morgenstierne (1838-1881), wife of Christian Carl Otto Lasson (1830-1893).

Their fifth child Marie Lasson (b. 1864).
Thence by family descent.
