Description
Petit genre; Vanity of life on earth before the Last Judgement. This painting reminds the brothers of the brotherhood that, whatever their rank, they are "charitables" whose duty is to assist the poor, the sick, the dying, those condemned to death... This community of destiny is symbolised by a crypt where the corpse of a bishop represents the church, the remains of a knight, the skulls the people. For each of them, the hand of Jesus Christ holds a balance that compares the benefit of the "seven works of charity"(1) with the errors of the "seven deadly sins" to which they may have given in, "Neither more nor less". The Last Judgement is simply evoked by the owl, a symbol of wisdom, whose song guides the souls of the elect towards eternal life.
