English: The portrait is clearly related to Holbein's preparatory study of Simon George, but this is the only case in Holbein's work where the painting does not closely follow the sketch, since the proportions and some details are different. Simon George is not recorded at court, but he is dressed in the exquisitely painted finery of a courtier. The carnation he holds may symbolise betrothal. References
