Description

Airmail stamp of the Republic of Burundi (First Republic); 1968; commemorative stamp of the issue to "Christmas 1968"; The dipicted stamp is BDI Michel: No. 464A from 1968 and shows as stamp motive a the painting "The Holy Family with Santa Anna" by El Greco (1541-1614) ("El Greco" means literally "The Greek" because he was born on Crete (Greece)) from the "Szépmuveszeti Muzeum" (= "Museum of Fine Arts") in Budapest (Hungary).; El Greco was a scholar of Titian.; It’s giving several paintings by El Greco to the topic "Holy Family", but only one is showing the "Saint Anne" (= mother of Mary = "Santa Anna") on the left side and the "Saint John" (Spanish original name: "San Juan Bautista"; German: "Johannes der Täufer") on the right side.; This painting was created (probably) 1595 in the Spanish town Toledo (not in USA) in the style of the Spanish Mannerism.; Since 1600 is this painting in Budapest.; Unfortunately this stamp was postmarked with an unreadable CTO.
