Description |
English: Detail of Double Portrait of Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve, called The Ambassadors, oil and tempera on oak wood, National Gallery, London.
This lower shelf between the two ambassadors shows a terrestrial globe, a lute, a Lutheran hymn book, an arithmetic book, dividers, and a bag of wooden flutes. A theme of disharmony is suggested, perhaps referring to the religious context of the ambassadors' mission: the lute has a broken string, the arithmetic book lies open on a division page, and one of the flutes juts out from the rest (Buck, 98). |
