Text Appearing Before Image:
in a bath made by dissolving onepart of formalin in ten parts of water to super-harden thegelatine film. Then the surface is mopped off with a wad ofwet absorbent cotton to remove surface dirt and specks ofgelatine. They are then stood on edge on pieces of blotter todrain and dry. If hardened in formahn they can be put in fullhot summer sunshine to dry rapidly usually in ten minutes orso. The exposure really seals the fate of the plate; if your nega-tives come out weak, thin, and transparent in the shadows youhave under-exposed. If they come out black, dense, with littletransparency anywhere they are over-exposed, and all you cando is to try again and change the exposure. I am blowing nohorn for the Cramer plates and the Eastman tank; they haveboth served me faithfully with most difficult natural historysubjects. THE SCULPTOR. LAURA ADAMS ARMER. 189 F 6/4, and see what exposure he will suggest. Some pro-fessionals seem to hear, smell or taste the proper exposure togive; some say they feel how much time to give. Properexposure in the above case often runs up to five minutes ormore depending on the depth of shade aperture used, and thegeneral brightness of the light out in the open. Did you ever focus on a rare flower in a swamp ten milesfrom civilization, and see the mosquitoes go by on the ground-glass image, the ones not biting you I mean ? Times like thisis when the meter is your truest friend. The exposure isreally all you have to watch out for; if it is correct the develop-ment will give you the exact detail in the shadows and the con-trast you wish. If it is not correct all you can do is to recordall the data in the note-book and try it again. It is really amost fascinating thing to study out the reasons why for suc-cess and failure. If you are seriously bitten by the photo bugget a tank,
