Object history | “These fossils were discovered in the opal mining region of Australia. Preserved within this rock are the remains of several extinct marine creatures known as belemnites. Belemnite are related to modern day cuttlefish and have soft bodies that are supported by internal pencil-shaped shells. These shells have been preserved as they were slowly replaced with the gem opal.” The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, IMCPL Digital Collections | |||||||||||||||||||||||
