Description
English: The children Beels, children of Mr. Marten Adriaan and Charlotte Christine Gildemeester:

Catharina Elisabeth Jacoba Beels (1815-1865) Leonard Marius Beels (1825-1867) Herman Hendrik Beels (1827-1916)

On the 31st of May 1860 Catharina married Jacob Swart Abrahamsz. in Haarlem. Her younger brother Leonard (depicted on the left) married lady Agnes Henriette van Loon on the 7th of May 1857 in Amsterdam and was a founding member of het oudheidkundig Genootschap (the archeological society) in Amsterdam. Herman (depicted on the right) married Anna Herculine Alexandrine Sandenbergh Matthiessen on the 8th of May 1851 in Haarlem, and was the director of de Associatie Cassa and De Nederlandsche Bank. This pastel drawing is one of the last large sized works by Hodges executed in this technique, a smaller sized study is part of the collection of the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam (inv.no. 59-477).
