Notes |
English: Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk (1473–1554), played a major role in Henry VIII's government. He was imprisoned during the reign of Edward VI on charges associated with the disgrace of his son Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, who was executed in 1547. He was one of several members of his family portrayed by Holbein, a group of whose clients was associated with Norfolk. Holbein depicts Howard as Earl Marshal of England, wearing the Order of the Garter with the St George pendant.
