Arms of Tyssen, granted 24 November 1687 to Francis Tyssen, Esquire, of the City London and Hackney, Middlesex, Or, on a chevron azure between three French marigolds slipped proper two lions respecting each other of the first (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1042). Quartered by Tyssen-Amherst, Baron Amherst of Hackney. Francis Tyssen (1653-1710) "the younger" of Shaklewell in the parish of Hackney, Middlesex, was a wealthy merchant in the City of London, who owned property in Hackney (including the rectory and advowson), Hoxton, Shoreditch, Stepney, Whitechapel, Essex and land in Offord Darcy and Offord Cluny in Huntingdonshire. Son of Francis Tyssen "the elder" by his wife Dorothy Collant. He married twice, firstly to Susanna Mathews (by whom he had one daughter Dorothy), secondly to Mary Western (by whom he had issue John, William, Samuel, Martha, Mary). His eldest son and heir was Francis Tyssen. He owned the Bridges Plantation in Angigua, inherited from his father. His estate in Hackney later became extremely valuable with the expansion of London (see Baron Amherst of Hackney). Seated at Shaklewell when his father wrote his will in 1690; still of the same place when he wrote his own will in 1710. "The Tyssens were formerly merchants at Flushing, in Holland, but about the reign of James II they settled in London and became naturalised subjects. Like many other City merchants at that time, they seem to have fixed their abode at Hackney and Shacklewell, and several of them were buried in Hackney Church."
