Description |
A mezzotint print portrait of the American author Washington Irving (1783– 1859) by the British engraver Charles Turner (1774– 1857) published in 1825, after a portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart Newton (1794–1835) in 1820. Newton painted two portraits of his friend Irving. The larger, which this print is based on, was painted in London in May 1920 while Irving was making arrangements for the first English edition of the The Sketch Book. The painting is currently in the collections of the Historic Hudson Valley. The file has been cropped to only show the portrait and not the surrounding paper. |
