Charlotte Godefride Élisabeth de Rohan est née le 7 octobre 1737 à Paris . Elle est la fille de Charles de Rohan , prince de Soubise, proche de Louis XV et par sa mère Anne marie Louise de la Tour d'Auvergne, descendante des ducs de Bouillon, petite-fille de Marie-Anne Mancini .
Elle épouse en 1753 Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, prince de Condé. C'est sans doute de cette période que date ce portrait de la princesse en costume de fantaisie.

La fondation Tansey possède un double portrait du prince et de la princesse de Condé par Welper. L'artiste y traite le buste de la princesse dans la même pose, il n'y change que le costume."
