Description

Montage of WW1 images from the Imperial War Museum

For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme. Factual corrections and alternative descriptions are encouraged separately from the original description. Additionally errors can be reported at this page to inform the Bundesarchiv.

Original historic description:

Westfront, deutscher Soldat Zentralbild Ein Deutscher Soldat.(1.Weltkrieg)

English: This is a photograph of a young German soldier engaged in the Battle of the Somme, 1916. He wears a helmet, so the photo is from late in 1916.
Deutsch: Deutscher Soldat an der Westfront, Stoss- bzw. Sturmtrupp mit einem Karabiner 98a-Gewehr.

Still image from The Battle of the Somme showing a wounded soldier being carried through a trench. The accompanying title frame read:  :British Tommies rescuing a comrade under shell fire. (This man died 30 minutes after reaching the trenches.)

English: Five soldiers silhouetted against the sky. Rays of sun burst through dark clouds to create a dramatic and atmospheric shot. They are all wearing steel helmets, and three of them are clearly carrying rifles and backpacks.

Original reads: 'BATTLE OF BROODSEYNDE [sic] RIDGE. - TROOPS MOVING UP AT EVENTIDE. MEN OF A YORKSHIRE REGIMENT ON THE MARCH.'

The Imperial War Museum caption (Q 2978) gives "A silhouetted file of men of the 8th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment going up to the line near Frezenberg.")
Español: Fusileros irlandeses de la 25ª Brigada, 8ª División, durante el primer día de la batalla.
English: A ration party of the Royal Irish Rifles in a communication trench during the Battle of the Somme. The date is believed to be 1 July 1916, the first day on the Somme, and the unit is possibly the 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles (25th Brigade, 8th Division).
