Initial versions

[edit]

@RCraig09: This looks fantastic! Some very small tweak suggestions:

  • In the last frame, part of one of the gray lines suddenly disappears in a very odd way.
  • That the vertical axis represents the number of patients isn't totally clear. Taking a cue from the way you handled the x-axis, how about something like using one File:Ic hotel 48px.svg icon at the bottom and multiple of them at the top to symbolize hospital beds filling up?

I'm looking forward to seeing this be adopted in the articles hopefully soon! Sdkb (talk) 05:52, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks User:Sdkb for your ongoing suggestions.
— Actually, I think I was mentally preparing for the English-language text version in which the words "With mitigation" are inserted under the final green curve. I purposely made the gray line disappear when the "with mitigation" curve is achieved, just to emphasize that final 1-second-long green curve without its being "split" by the gray line... but I'll think it over again before uploading any next version.
— Thanks for the link to the "bed" image. I think it's a great improvement, and my first impression is that green bed(s) should be in the bottom part of the axis by the green rectangle, but in the red zone there should only be "shadows" or "silhouettes" of beds, or maybe bed(s) with a circle/crossbar like there is now over the gray cross in the upper right. But space is limited. I've already written a "suggested caption" in the file description page (green text paragraph) for the benefit of the international crowd. —RCraig09 (talk) 06:16, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@RCraig09: I think I almost like this better than the English version, since it's just as understandable without having to use so much text. I'll try inserting into some non-English Wikipedias and see if it sticks. If I can be permitted to continue being a little picky, I'm not sure the y axis is quite clear yet. Having many beds at the bottom and then only a crossed out bed at the top and a person standing almost seems to say "we used to have a bunch of patients, but then they got well so we don't have them anymore and they're standing up and healthy". The way I'd do it would be to have one green bed at the bottom, and then three red beds at the top. That more clearly communicates "the hospitals are filling up". @Sdkb: I think everything is problematic in some way.
— What do you think of putting a large bed beside the bottom of the green region, a slightly smaller bed in beside the middle of the green region, a tiny bed at the top of the green region, ... and then beside the middle of the red region putting a gray bed "crossed out" as now. Leave out the human figure altogether (simpler usually = better) To me, that communicates a dwindling supply.
— I suggest waiting on this, before making it go live in other-language Wikipedias. Now that I have a "system" I can generate a new version with an hour's work. —RCraig09 (talk) 14:48, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I already put it on a few non-English talk pages, but I'll hold off on additional ones. And it's a dwindling supply of empty beds, but an increasing number of full beds, and the graphic we're using has a person's head, so I think the latter is more appropriate. If can find/modify the bed graphic so there's an "empty bed" version, perhaps we could have three beds at the bottom with one full, and three at the top with all full. — I can easily make an unoccupied-bed graphic inside Inkscape, no problem.
— I'm worried that full beds at the top will imply that there are beds available for everyone. I'm still pondering different representations, and I don't think a few hours' delay will matter while I scratch my head. —RCraig09 (talk) 17:55, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
— Voila! The decreasing-transparency "heads" in the hospital beds convey that hospitals are filling. The red circle/diagonal ("forbidden") icons in the top portion convey that no empty beds (left axis), and no medical care (right side of red rectangle), are available. I actually like it! Thanks again for the thought-provoking suggestions. —RCraig09 (talk) 19:42, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good! Sdkb (talk) 19:08, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
