Common issue: Names displayed in mixed languages

When you view the SVG but see the labels in many languages (e.g., Russian, Georgian, and Hanzi), that is the result of your browser language preference settings.

The default language is English. If you are an English speaker, then all the labels should be in English. Every translation should have an English translation.

If you prefer Ukrainian over all other languages, then your browser will prefer to display labels in Ukrainian. If a label does not have a Ukrainian translation, then some other language will display (either another one of your preferences or the English default).

If you are seeing labels in unexpected languages, then you need to remove the unexpected languages from your browser preferences. See File_talk:2022_Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine.svg/Archive_3#Map_in_Chinese?.

Common issue: Skill needed to edit the map

This SVG file is complex. It uses switch elements to translate place names and dates. It can be challenging to edit the file. The file needs to keep its translations, and editors need to avoid inadvertently introducing bad translations.

Anyone with a Commons account should be able to use SVG Translate to add or edit translations to this file. SVG Translate offers a simple interface. The only daunting part of using SVG Translate is the large number of translations presented: there are over 600 place names. (The tool may take some time to load.)

This SVG file needs some significant graphics editing skills to avoid introducing errors. As far as I know, Inkscape is the ONLY graphics editor that should be used on this file. (Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw will probably throw away all the existing translations.) However, Inkscape will often appear to produce the correct result when it does not. In particular, copying some text and then editing that text may still have the translations of the original. Some Inkscape users have inadvertently added graphics elements as children of a switch; those elements will not display correctly.

Someone with significant SVG and XML skills can edit the file with a text editor.

Please do not use an SVG optimizer on this file.

Common question: Why do some lines have a hyphen (dash)?

Some lines (such as the legend's "Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia" and "-") have a hyphen in an otherwise empty line. The hyphen is there to keep the second line from being deleted and confusing SVG Translate. Several languages use two lines for the translation. Glrx (talk) 12:54, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

IIRC, there is another Phabricator ticket where empty tspan elements were removed and caused subsequent translation problems. If not, then a new ticket is needed.

The trouble may be at line 254. All the translatable nodes (text and tspan elements) are scanned. If the element has no child nodes (which would be true for an empty tspan), then that element would be removed. Consider a two-line translation where some lines may be empty. This code will remove the empty line. When a translation on that switch is attempted, the number of tspan elements will not match.

Names of some cities and towns which were recently added

Some of the cities and towns, which were recently added, mostly in Russia, don't have an English spelling. English spelling (or at least the same system of spelling) should be applied on the all names of the settlements.

I don't know if this a mistake in coding or something like that, so I would like to ask whether anyone has similar problem. Thanks! Berobalkan (talk) 08:26, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Yes, several cities do not have explicit systemLanguage="en" spellings.

For the dates, I had not run my date checking script in a long time. It finds a few errors, but is flooded with minor Irish date errors.

While checking the above, I got sidetracked by a validation error that kills SVG Translate.

Running my date checker turns up some issues.

There is a Russian date label just below the Synkivka label that is messed up. The English display is 1 March 2022, but the default and other translations are 2024-09-07.

There are attack arrows on the 4 oil rigs. One Ukrainian date is shown as 2023-08 (switch22898-1). Another date was suppressed (switch4679-7). I have reenabled that date so now two Ukrainian dates of 2023-08 are shown.

@Berobalkan:

All Russian cities should now have an English spelling equal to the default spelling. That means if your browser prefers English but accepts Russian, all the place names should show up in English rather than mixed English and Russian.

Russian cities should be marked with the class ruc.

Right, but fighting within the city itself had been stagnate since early 2023 (and Russia has had that presence the whole time) so to say months ago that Vuhledar itself was contested would be misleading as the city core was under Ukrainian control and the battle was not ongoing (maybe a shared control marker like Kamianske would have been better), and only in the past few days (or even hours) has that city core (i.e. the place with high-rise buildings) become contested. New names

Recently more than 300 settlements were renamed as a part of derussification. Since it's so recent it makes sense to keep some of the old names on the map at least for now (old Sievierodonetsk instead of new Siverskodonetsk), but the names of settlements located far away from the frontline could be updated. This includes:

• Chervonohrad → Sheptytskyi
• Krasnohrad → Berestyn
• Novomoskovsk → Samar
• Pershotravensk → Shakhtarske
• Pervomaiskyi → Zlatopil
• Vatutine → Bahacheve
• Pershotravneve → Kvartsytne

My logic behind this is that Western sources (including English language sources) are likely to continue using the old names for at least a while as the audience is used to them, but of course this only applies cities that regularly appear on the news - mostly the ones on/near the frontline. Meanwhile, if something happens in cities far away that happen to be renamed recently, Ukrainian news will report on that first (meaning that the official, new names will be used), and then Western news will directly translate that. This applies not just to cities but also the renamed raions. As an example, if Samar Raion gets bombed and news report on that (without mentioning the old name, Novomoskovsk Raion), a person might look for Samar on this map and end up not finding it. Such a scenario might never happen, and in that case changing the names shouldn't be a downgrade still. Shwabb1 (talk) 04:54, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

Nikolske, Sievierodonetsk, Molodohvardiisk, Pervomaisk (in Luhansk Oblast), Novopskov were all renamed recently but are currently occupied. Krasnoperekopsk was also renamed earlier on paper (but it's in Crimea so effectively there was no change). The map has a town/city of Tarkhankut, but I cannot find that city in Wikidata or on other maps. There is a en:Tarkhankut_Peninsula, cape, and lighthouse. Glrx (talk) 19:53, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Also, for Timashyovsk, the Russian letter "ё" (yo) has been historically transliterated as an "e", hence why the English article for the town spells it Timashevsk. Physeters^✉ 14:21, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

No worries. I cobbled together some code to check Russian transliterations. en:Romanization_of_Russian lists several methods, and the best match has been the Road Signs column. It would produce Timashevsk (after ш use e), but that did not match Wikidata's Timashyovsk (Q196654). That's why the "error?" in the table. Glrx (talk) 15:56, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

Hirnyk

Hirnyk, southeast of Pokrovsk, with a similar population to Ukrainsk and a contested city, should be added if possible. Some no-longer-frontline villages such as Pervomaiske and Vodiane (in part because the former's label is adjacent to four markers, creating some ambiguity) I think can also be safely removed (or at least for the English version of the svg).
