Visual pun
[edit]- Ambigrams are visual puns, as described by Douglas Hofstadter and Burkard Polster: "The essence is imbuing a single written form with ambiguity" says Hofstadter in his book Metamagical Themas (everyone should read!). This creation is like the palindromic sentence "Dog, as a devil deified, lived as a god" readable from left to right and from right to left. Or "Satan, oscillate my metallic sonatas"
- Similar works:
- Dogma I am god
- Dieu = God / Chien = Dog
- No religion
- Ciel un laïc
- Snake Aliens👽
- Va au diable
- Jude / Muslim ☮
- Read the article Jihad on Wikipedia. The current version in English displays the word "Devil" with an intra-link to the article "Satan". The word "evil(s)" also appears 4 times (four). There might be a relation between Jihad and Devil/Evil(s). And why "Satan" is anagram of "Santa"? 🎅
- The origin of this work comes from the French word "Deuil" (with a U), which means "bereavement" in English. Surprising coincidence that "Deuil" and "Devil" are graphically very similar. But is it not another interesting coincidence that the term "Jihad", known in the dictionaries as "war" or "crusade", becomes a bereavement ("deuil"), synonym of "sorrow", "affliction", "distress", for the terrible consequences of all wars?
- Similar ambigrams have been published in books, like Angels & Demons by John Langdon (in Dan Brown's best-seller - archive). Anyone is free to try, with pen and paper, to find more appropriate combinations of words /letters. It's really a funny game! 🙃 -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:56, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
