I don't think it's really either in a deadpan literal sense. It's semi-jocular symbols of hypothetical non-seriously-postulated utopias/dystopias and/or personal relationship statuses, which some in BDSM or quasi-BDSM situations may possibly find relevant to their own lifestyles...
