Improve clarity
[edit]Excellent! Finally a map for Misrata!
Two problems here:
1) The resolution is way too high. The names on the map are completely illegible when you look at it in the Battle of Misrata article.
2) It should be "Dairy factory", not "Diary factory".
Other than that, this looks like a fine map! ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 23:07, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- I created the map on Ubuntu and it looked fine initially, however viewing it in Windows the letters are indeed illegible even when viewed in commons. I will try to fix it tomorrow.--Rafy (talk) 00:16, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Fighting at airport?
[edit]Reports seem to indicate that the frontline has shifted to the airport: [1]. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen 04:50, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Airport and other districts
[edit]I suggest to move the frontline from the central hospital to the western entrance of the city (Kharyba Bridge). Dzera and Al Gaddariya on the western outskirts are probably in rebels hands, because they were bombarded by loyalist forces.
According to this http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=450099&tid=88994
Misurata port was taken by Gaddafy forses and about 500 rebels surrendered.
This link is in Russian language. If somebody has another source to confirm that?
Didn't happen. Ships still entering port. Not a reliable source either. Zenithfel (talk) 20:25, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
You must make the map bigger. The rebels are attacking the west outskirsts of the city (they are fighting) on the beach mounds) and probably captured Ruwayah. Its on the polish site, but with translator it will be understandable. http://www.tvn24.pl/12691,1702111,,,rebelianci-odgryzaja-sie-w-oblezonej-misracie,wiadomosc.html
- If Polish/Russian/Chinese... News are reliable we should find them back in Arabic or English.--Rafy (talk) 18:15, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
Many sources but they all repeat Gadday government words. No independent sources. More interesting is why last days there is no news about ships comming in port.
If it is in rebel hands - what is the problem. NATO spokesman says: "We clear mines in harbour." I'm curious what they actualy did.
If you read that polish source you would see that they are not reepeting the Libyan goverment propaganda, but they are reporting the same informations like EAP (European Press Agency).
Rebel capture of airport
[edit]From AJE:
- 2:15pm
- Libyan rebels captured the airport in the western city of Misurata after fierce fighting with Muammar Gaddafi's forces on Wednesday, an AFP correspondent at the scene reported.
- The rebels were in full control of the airport, with hundreds celebrating in the streets, the correspondent said.
Airport should be marked as in rebel zone. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 13:10, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Pushing west
[edit]Ah, nice to see Rafy updated the map. To give another source of the westward push of anti-Gaddafi forces: [2]. Elllit (talk) 05:49, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
What does the shading mean?
[edit]What does the shading mean, my friends? - 188.141.61.64 (talk) 16:35, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Urban and industrial areas.--Rafy talk 08:59, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Western edge of city
[edit]Hi, regarding western edge of city, there are reports that rebel fighters are currently battling for control of Ad Dafiniyah [3]. Should we include that to map? --EllsworthSK (talk) 15:23, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Another sources [4] and [5] --EllsworthSK (talk) 21:19, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- It has been added here.--Rafy talk 10:21, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, also let me thank you for this awesome map you created. For the south and southeast edge of city there also exist this map [6] which could be of some use. --EllsworthSK (talk) 08:34, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about the vast advances in the southern and southeastern parts depicted there. It seems to rely solely on claims of anti-Gaddaffi forces. There apparently are advances but I haven't seen any independent verification. Elllit (talk) 10:20, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- You are referring to the capture of the airport? Just look at any of these results. I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed... ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 11:01, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- See also the bulletin from AJE here as well. Also, don't you mean southwestern? The southeastern outskirts are still indicated as loyalist-held. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 11:04, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- It´s based on on-ground NYT journalist. If you notice only difference between the current map and one presented in NYT times is about southeast area which is largely unpopulated. From this area Gaddafi forces were shelling port which stopped two days ago. --EllsworthSK (talk) 13:50, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- No, airport is confirmed by some sources, no doubt about that capture. But in the map by Ellsworth linked is a huge chunk of southeastern area beyond city limits marked as under control of anti-Gaddafi forces. Yet, the legend states: "Southeast: Rebels say they control an area of swamps and dunes southeast of the city, blocking Qaddafi forces from reaching the port from that direction. Rebels also claim to control a section of the coastal highway." which, in my opinion, doesn't seem very reliable. Sorry, that I confused you. Elllit (talk) 15:47, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Create a new map???
[edit]Look on this map http://feb17.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/misrata-seige.jpg This is quite a good base map to create a new for the siege of the city. What do you all think?
- I personaly don't think that the current map needs expanding as it only shows the w:Battle of Misrata any further advances by rebels can be easily depicted on other detailed maps of Tripolitania.--Rafy (talk) 11:27, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- I concur with not expanding the current map. If rebels advance further, it wouldn't be a map depicting "Battle for Misrata" any longer. Do you suggest an intermediate map between the current one and the Tripolitanian Front map? If so, I don't think that would be necessary. Elllit (talk) 15:57, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- The three major locations in Misrata (City centre, Port, Airport) are clearly visible from the other map and I don't think adding more details would bring any benefits.--Rafy (talk) 16:08, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Exactly, spamming maps makes things worse. Rafy's maps show everything needed, imho. Elllit (talk) 18:01, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Southeast
[edit]The New York Times seems to indicate that the southeastern swamp/dune area is under rebel control. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 18:54, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
- Done, souldn't this conclude the battle of Misrata? At least one phase of it if Loyalists are to mount a notable counter-offensive.--Rafy (talk) 12:20, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, we've decided it to be a rebel victory. One thing: There seems to still be a green arrow in rebel-held territory. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 14:56, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for update, however in map there is still central square painted in green colour. I think we can agree that there are no Gaddafi forces occupied building in Misurata as of now. --EllsworthSK (talk) 15:27, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
- The dark greenish/greyish patch is supposed to be Al-Nasr sq., the main square in the city. I could change its colour if it looks suspicious.--Rafy (talk) 10:32, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Fully liberated?
[edit]I was thinking: is it safe to say the city is fully liberated as for now? I mean, at least the part visible in the map?
If so: instead of just covering the whole map red (which would render the map pointless) the arrows could indicate how far rebels have advanced in that direction? e.g. by putting the name into the arrow or something.
Any thoughts? Elllit (talk) 15:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- I will create another map for the time-line of the battle of Misrata. This one would be still useful in the future maybe as loyalists appear to be pushing back.--Rafy (talk) 20:06, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- They're trying to push back, but haven't reversed much of the rebel gains, only slowed the advance. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 01:19, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
I think the map should be expanded, as Misrata has been liberated for more than a month now. 70.187.185.194 22:48, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
- Well... there are maps that show the "expanded" state. The Tripolitanian Front for instance. No need to make another one Elllit (talk) 14:59, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Missiles?
[edit]Are there still missile attacks going on, or should the little bursts on the map around the port and city be removed? 76.117.247.55 04:00, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
