1. In 1930, the Irish Free State had "the same constitutional status in the Community of Nations known as the British Empire as the Dominion of Canada, the Commonwealth of Australia, the Dominion of New Zealand, and the Union of South Africa", "the position of the Irish Free State in relation to the Imperial Parliament and Government and otherwise shall be that of the Dominion of Canada" and Members of its Parliament had to take an Oath of Fidelity to King George V - see Articles 1, 2 and 4 of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921.

2. Any candidate for election had to promise that they would take their seat and take that oath. If they were elected and failed to do so, they would be disqualified for five years - see Section 4 of the Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Act, 1927
