Je vous fais parvenir ce courriel pour vous informer d'une erreur concernant le drapeau que vous avez annoncé comme étant celui de la Nouvelle-Calédonie. En effet, vous avez attribué à la Nouvelle-Calédonie le drapeau d'un parti politique, celui du FLNKS. A ce jour ce drapeau n'est en aucune façon l'étendard de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, qui reste un Territoire de français du pacifique et n'a comme seul drapeau celui de la France.

You are right. This flag is the flag of FLNKS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanak_and_Socialist_National_Liberation_Front , not of New Caledonia. Even there this error is obvious, as in this article the displayed logo uses the file "Flag_of_New_Caledonia.svg".

Please modify the file Flag_of_New_Caledonia.svg to represent the national flag of the hole Republic of France. Just take the file Flag_of_France.svg for this purpose.

Create a new file with p.ex. Flag_of_FLNKS.svg and put the old file there.

A few months ago, this image was moved without discussion from File:Flag of New Caledonia.svg to File:Pro-Independence Flag of New Caledonia.svg. This followed a similar move requests being declined, and took place while there was an active deletion discussion on the image, in which there was no consensus for this rename.

This flag has two distinct official statuses. Originally, it was the flag of the w:Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) political party. Subsequently, it has been authorized for use by the New Caledonian government alongside the French tricolour to represent New Caledonia. In the later case, it certainly isn't used to represent "pro-independence". (The government is anti-independence.) It is used to represent the Kanak indigenous community. FLNKS is certainly a pro-independence party, but it isn't a single issue party.

The current title is bad on a number of fronts. It conflates the two usages (party and government), it's ambiguous as there are other pro-independence parties with flags (ie. w:fr:Fichier:Union-caledonienne.png), and gives the impression that this is some unofficial "movement" flag, and not a flag with official status.

I don't particularly care if the flag gets moved back to its original consensus title of File:Flag of New Caledonia.svg, or moves to a title based on it's other usage (ie File:Flag of FLNKS.svg). (Redirects can take care of the rest.) I'm open to any suggestions that are accurate, and isn't misleading, unlike the current title. TDL (talk) 04:00, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
