File talk:NASA logo.svg
Use explicitly forbidden
[edit]http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/policies.html#Guidelines
Section 2 states: "This general permission does not include the NASA insignia logo (the blue "meatball" insignia), the NASA logotype (the red "worm" logo), and the NASA seal. These images may not be used by persons who are not NASA employees or on products (including web pages) that are not NASA sponsored."
To me this file is not in the Public Domain, as most of NASA's work is.
Does this not mean that this file is being used in violation of copyright and should be deleted?

- No, it is not a copyright restriction. There are other laws which prevent fraudulent usages, but as long as our use is not in violation, it's fine. See Commons:Non-copyright restrictions. Carl Lindberg (talk) 00:59, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Inaccurate colors
[edit]
The RGB values of the red vector and blue disc as extracted from the NASA PDF file do not match the RGB values from the Encapsulated PostScript file of the "official" insignia offered at http://grcpublishing.grc.nasa.gov/graphics/meatball.cfm, the NASA Glenn Research Center site, when imported into Inkscape. I've inserted an HTML table below with the cell backgrounds colored according to the codes, and even on a cheap 24-bit LCD monitor with a color gamut less than 16.7 million colors the difference is readily apparent. — Quicksilver@ 18:40, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
NASA PDF publication blue #0066b2ff (0,102,178) | NASA PDF publication red #ec1c24ff (236,28,36) |
NASA Glenn Research Center blue "official" #1a5dadff (26,93,173) | NASA Glenn Research Center red "official" #ee293dff (238,41,61) |
- You're right, the colors here are definitely wrong, the ones you showed seem to be used in all official publications apart from small icons for the web. Let's change that. --Julian H.✈ (talk/files) 19:42, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- I've prepared a replacement SVG file, derived from the NASA Glenn Research Center EPS version, but because of the edit protection on the image, I'can't upload it. Need to get it temporarily unprotected first. I've left a message at User talk:Denniss, since he/she was the one who protected the page on June 30, 2013. — Quicksilver@ 19:57, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Please upload it as variant image first to enable easy comparing and further discussion. Especially the red color seems off and does not seem to be the color used on the official website and on Logo images like here. Also [1] mentions two slightly different versions for light/dark background. --Denniss (talk) 21:04, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Colors in JPEG photos cannot be trusted, as they vary with lighting conditions, time of day, and automatic white balance that may be built into digital cameras, as well as any manipulations of the color palettes that may have taken place prior to publication, but may not be reflected in the file metadata. Moreover, JPEG is a lossy format, causing color bleeding from adjacent regions. If NASA says the EPS file is official, then barring any information to the contrary, it's official. The only question then is whether Inkscape alters the RGB values when an EPS file is imported. See File:NASA logo.svg for the version derived from the Glenn Research Center EPS file. — Quicksilver@ 22:01, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
