Hi Skate Tier - thank you for this map. It's been very well received by the Scots language community and posted on the Facebook Page of the Scots Language Centre. I'm interested in some of the details, as I'm preparing a conference paper on the Scots language Census results.

Would you mind if I ask a couple of things? The data output areas first of all - are these SNS data zones or what? And your definition of speaker - there are three columns that can be combined to produce a figure for speakers ('Speaks, reads and writes Scots', 'Speaks but does not read or write Scots', and 'Speaks and reads but does not write Scots'), leaving aside the small and impenetrable 'Other' category. Is this what you've done?

I'm puzzled about the very high level of Scots speakers in the Tongue area of Sutherland, and haven't yet located the data that support this. Can I ask what Census data this comes from?

Finally, I can't really cite an anonymous internet source in an academic context - though you clearly have expertise. Is there any forthcoming publication, perhaps, under your own name that I could refer to for the map? I can be contacted at caroline.macafee AT btinternet.com.
