Telsqof and Risala

[edit]

Kurdish forces have taken Telsqof and Risala. Please update. http://rudaw.net/english/kurdistan/170820141 --Vectrex (talk) 10:47, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Discrepancies

[edit]

I was comparing this map with the more detailed Cities and Towns During the Syrian Civil War and noticed several discrepancies between the two around Tall Ma'ruf, so the question is, which one is right? --ArchPope Sextus VI (talk) 02:14, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kobane

[edit]

I'm not being able to correct it now, but Kobane (or Kobani) now is far better known by its Kurdish name (Kobane or Kobani) than by its Arab name (Ayn al-Arab). So, maybe at least, Kobane should be displayed according to its Kurdish name in the 1st place and its Arab name in " ", in smaller letters.Mondolkiri1 (talk) 18:21, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ayn al-Arab is its real name. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 04:32, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

this map have a great mistake just see this map and cities and towns during the syrian civil war and see realy map!

The decision at english wikipedia is Kobani. Overwhelmingly the reliable sources use Kobani. Legacypac (talk) 15:18, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

reverted map

[edit]

I reverted a new version that had a bunch of problems. It looked like a ISIL published map, erasing the Iraq/Syria border, labeling the gray Islamic State, highlighting the Golan Heights bright blue, adding an English POV legend which conflicts with the multilanguage legends and put some twitter acct on the map. This is a widely used document - please don't screw it up like that. Legacypac (talk) 15:28, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I saw the version in question; after investigating the source, it is possible that @Only_IS_Maps is an IS-supportive Twitter account. It's hard to say because the only posts they have are one that says "As salamu alaykum" and the rest are maps depicting the changes in IS' borders. Nothing really incriminating. The differences between the versions were the part that was a little concerning. Most of the changes of the file in question were showing IS gains. The area around Kobane was made gray, Anbar was almost entirely under IS control, and there was a big piece of IS territory jutting near Damascus. The only reason I have a little reservation in taking it down is how do we know it's wrong? Given that the map hadn't been updated in over a month and this discussion page is sparsely filled with few citations given over changes, do we really know what's going on down there for sure? Given the dangerous area, news crews are having a hell of a time keeping up with changes, and quite frankly, all I'm seeing is a propaganda war. Western media tries to make it look like IS is losing, IS-sponsored media is portraying them as if they were at the gates of Baghdad and Damascus with little resistance. The Siege of Kobane is still ongoing, and IS only controls less than half of the town, but they still control virtually the entire area around it. Even the latest, unrelated revision shows IS gains near Damascus as well. Who's to say this image from RobiH isn't somewhat accurate?
Also, I think the removal of the Syria/Iraq label on the border was nice. The border itself is still drawn, so as long as you can follow it with your eyes, anyone with a knowledge of political geography can tell de jure Syria from de jure Iraq, regardless of the colors.

Should I use this as an update?

[edit]

I've done my best to create an update for this (from the source module), but I can't get the colours to match the existing document. File:Iraqi_Insurgency_and_Syrian_Civil_War.png Should I use it as an update, try to get the colours to match and then do so, or not use it? --Banak (talk) 05:31, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I assumed 50% transparency and calculated the colours by comparing to the existing map. --Banak (talk) 19:53, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mysterious symbols on map

Rural support. John Smith the Gamer (talk) 10:52, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thbis map needs a more detailed key. There are towns where one colour is encircled by another colour (Is this where the town is being surrounded? or...) there are towns where the colours are split down the middle (peaceful co-occupation??) and the conflicts marked as squares with checkered colours - These should all be clarified though and not down to guesses. 80.176.89.230 16:05, 12 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As animated .gif?

[edit]

Should the image be represented as an animated gif (or other animation format), such that the differences in time are more explicit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by KommuSoft (talk • contribs) 11:25, January 18, 2015‎ (UTC)

If you want to create an animated gif, feel free. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:46, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You could, though I'd avoid using any versions that were reverted and may have a little trouble centralizing the map. Note that this map lags behind the detailed map, which lags behind reality, and there are often mistakes in the colouring or changes in how the map is coloured that don't reflect any change in reality. Also some new versions weren't changing content, but style, e.g. removing stripes and the colour change. I did consider the idea myself, but realized centring images would suck. I therefore recommend you start with the 22:47, 16 June 2014 version. John Smith the Gamer (talk) 10:58, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dier Ezzor Road

[edit]

I don't think many people truly know who controls the Dier Ezzor Road, only the people actually fighting there on the ground. However, I have read reports of the Syrian Army sending convoys along the road to resupply the forces inside the city. The current map makes it seem like ISIS is blocking all reinforcements in and out of the city; however, this is not the case. I think that map should be changed: add a thin red line along the road to indicate the Syrian government supply line. Thoughts? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:0:b200:f7d9:1498:3b64:993f:66d2 (talk) 22:51, January 25, 2015‎ (UTC)

The number of Commons users who are knowledgeable enough about the situation and who have map-making abilities is almost 0. I do not understand the subject well enough myself to make any changes. By all means please register an account and make the change. You could use something like GIMP. We need more people who understand the situation who can make changes. What is about the grey areas/cities near the green territory in north-western Syria (e.g. Darkush), which faction is that?

Measure Scale

[edit]

I would appreciate a measure skale (miles, km) on the file. Thank you. -- Korkwand (talk) 15:56, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, been thinking about this a while... I'd say the most likely way to get this to work would be to go to Syria-Iraq_location_map.svg and request they add a scale or make a version of the map with a scale. I have no idea how to do a scale myself. Banak (talk) 15:52, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Actual interactive map

[edit]

Where is the actual template of this map, where you can click on the towns and villages? 95.170.202.18 08:48, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the actual template, not sure it's exactly interactive. Banak (talk) 15:34, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Colours

[edit]

At the moment it's hard to pick out the towns (compare the ISIS towns where they are instantly noticeable), and the different colours for the Kurds are virtually indistinguishable. It may be helpful if there is better contrast between the Syrian and Iraqi Kurdish controlled areas (yellow and lime-yellow?) and to have their held towns in a darker colour than their marked area(s) (orange-yellow and lime/mid-green). Just a suggestion. 80.176.89.230 15:51, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The colors have changes because some users are using different mapping templates, or because some have more skill then others in the coloring. However, in late February 2015, the color quality has vastly improved as a whole, although it isn't as sharp or deeply saturated as maps before mid-December 2014. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:22, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can change the colours fairly easily, I plan to do so when I get time. Banak (talk) 17:10, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mosul Dam

[edit]

Is the damn under Isis control? When i look at the map, it looks like its under Isis' control, but elsewhere on the web it's declared to be under Kurdish control. What's going on?80.176.89.230 13:38, 28 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's definitely under Kurdish control, and it has remained under Kurdish control since August 17, 2014. The problem is that the other web sites are using badly-outdated territorial maps dating back to July or early August 2014. And the other contradictory maps are just not that detailed, so theu may have placed the Mosul Dam area under ISIL control by mistake. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:20, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Scale bar

[edit]

Would it be possible to put in a scale bar (miles, km) please? Simplicius (talk) 14:04, 9 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's outside my skill set so I don't know how to make it. If someone would add it to the map it's made from File:Syria-Iraq location map.svg then I think that'd be the easiest solution, but that might not be the case.
Spesh531, what do you think? How easy/beneficial would it be to add a scale? Banak (talk) 22:04, 9 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Walid-Tanf Border Crossing

[edit]

The border crossing still red even though it's surrounded by gray. It should be black. 2602:306:32A6:1100:65F0:2088:84A9:49F8 18:54, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Really sloppy editing of map

[edit]

This map is a travesty, almost a slow-going edit war. The most recent update, like all the others labeled "update" without any details as to what was changed, undid a lot of previous updates by other users. This includes quite a lot of widely acknowledged stuff, like the IS conquest of the at-Tanf crossing. At current, this is the worst detailed map on the 'net, mostly because of these unsourced edits, and total lack of discussion or agreement on what is changing and why. Very unhelpful.

All the towns and cities are from the modules. It appears that's what you're referring to, though I'm not sure.
What I say update, I mean the entire map. I'm updating directly the entire map from the module. It would be incorrect to say I just updated one area. If I did that at a bad point, when the map is innacurate, please tell me or revert. The way I do that makes working collaboratively harder, and a graphical problem with the module has complicated things. Reguardless, if there is a problem with my version other than the location of the dots, I shall investigate and pause updating. Also consider updating here and here when updating this map. Banak (talk) 08:35, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Map Fixes

[edit]

I would like to request a few changes to the map to improve its accuracy. Firstly, it needs to be updated according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Syrian_and_Iraqi_insurgency_detailed_map of course, but also there are a few errors with regards to territorial control shading. Firstly, the Syrian Arab Army presence around Deir-Ezzor needs to be changed to more of a triangle rather than a circle, as only the road to Shulah is controlled by SAA and not the surrounding countryside. Secondly, ISIS has a supply route which it controls to the one ISIS town directly east of Nabek in Syria. This needs to be shown. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, ISIS has a rural presence in the Iraqi desert which extends beyond Rutbah. It regularly mounts suicide attacks against Trebil border crossing and Nukhayb: http://english.shafaaq.com/security/14370-security-forces-repel-isis-attack-on-nukhayb-town.html Though the actual control is not quite this extensive, this pro-ISIS map shows the rural presence that allows ISIS to conduct regular suicide bomb attacks against these remote targets. http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/899483iraqsyria20150601.png

Also, Banak, what do you think of the idea of removing the separate color for Jabhat al-Nusra? I think that with the Jaish al-Fatah Operations Room, Nusra and other groups work increasingly more closely, and countryside control is not exclusive to either group, so it should be changed to green. Thoughts? Pbfreespace3 (talk) 22:24, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm all for removing the colour for al-Nursa, it's a pain that I'm not convinced is justified. They typically fight as part of rebel forces, and whilst it might be important to show which towns they're in, there's rarely a "front line" between al-Nursa and other non-IS rebels in the same sense as other factions. That said, other's may have other ideas. I can't invest too much time atm to figure out exactly what you mean (I'm pretty tired) but I can update in accordance with the template fairly easily. Banak (talk) 20:32, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion of Lebanon

[edit]

I'm not sure of the accuracy of the Lebanon component of this map, because of the low number of dots, and the infrequent updates to the map. Given the wide usage of this map, I'm surprised we included it so quietly. Banak (talk) 20:54, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to include it in a separate image. Since the Lebanese insurgency (the Syrian Civil War spillover in Lebanon) is an active region in the conflict (in the Qalamoun and Arsal regions), and since ISIL and al-Nusra Front (both belligerents in the wider conflict) still control territory in northeastern Lebanon, I plan to replace the maps on the ISIL articles with the latest image by the end of this week. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 19:54, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the updates to Lebanon's Qalamoun region are hard to come by. There are occasional articles released on Hezbollah's and the Lebanese Army's advances in the region, but comprehensive maps of the region are difficult to find. If you manage to find any new maps, feel free to contribute to the map template. BlueHypercane761 (talk) 19:55, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the head's up. It appears you may actually have more people wanting it to be included than I thought at first, it's not my intention to fight a rough consensus. Banak (talk) 07:49, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

'Anyone there?!?! Please update the map!!! It is almost a month old!!! Update NOW!!!!
Was 3/4 of the way to making an update when my software crashed. Hopefully will be able to get a new one soon. Bear in mind I've got about a month's worth of changes to do to it. Banak (talk) 19:20, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Banak Thank you so much for updating it. However, you forgot to show the ISIS encirclement in Hasakah; that YPG pocket is connected the the rest of their territory. Also, you need to show the ISIS presence near Nukhayb. Even though the area is mostly desert, ISIS has mounted many suicide attacks and ambushes near Nukhayb town, and I think showing this on the map is a good idea, like this: http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/899483iraqsyria20150601.png Pbfreespace3 (talk) 00:15, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Lebanon removal?

[edit]

I brought this up on the page for this file in the commons, but I thought I'd mention it here too.

I feel we should revert the most recent change to the map; while it's true there's minimal or no IS activity in Lebanon, that's no reason to blank it out on the map - after all, the map is meant to show the territories of all of the insurgent groups in the area (hence the "And Lebanese Insurgencies" in the title), as opposed to just the ones in Syria and Iraq.

Any thoughts?

Update

[edit]

Can someone update this map? A lot is happening, and it looks like ISIS is shrinking fast. Can please someone update map? --94.189.202.166 22:40, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's been less than three days since the last update to this map, hardly a long period of time. Allegedly, ISIS just gained some ground in Northern Aleppo, so I'm not convinced of the former either, though I have heard of small gains against rebels by the government. Having checked the module that's used for this map, in Syria at least, ISIS appears to be gaining ground. Banak (talk) 23:03, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, now the map has been updated, but I still miss some changes or correction of some mistakes like the Infantry school north of Aleppo or the missle battery at the DeirEzzor airport, both since many weeks with ISIS. On the other hand ISIS lost (today?) already the area between Khanaser and Ithraya and I am not really sure if ISIS is really cut off at al-Hawl (Hasakah)... --Mughira1395 (talk) 22:41, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Update November 18th

[edit]

Is there really a difference between the 15th map and the 18th map? Maybe wrong map uploaded? Seems like it is the same withe Syria-only-map. --2A02:908:C30:EBE0:68F8:97B1:F1D3:3265 10:52, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There are clear differences in Iraq. In Syria Huwwain and neighbouring villagers, a town by Morek and 3 towns to the east of Alepo have been updated. Gunna compare this to the module, because it's not as much change as I was expecting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Banak (talk • contribs) 16:56, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
