Question

[edit]

@Kanguole, I've been learning GIS for use like this—was there any particular automation or method you used to draw the SVG boundaries, or did you just eyeball it/adjust it with the source laid on top? Remsense (talk) 00:43, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I create new layers containing shapes or points in QGIS. It has a facility for georeferencing rasters, and then I use the point tool to draw something that matches. There are freely available layers for oceans, rivers and stuff. One shortcut is to extend the shape into the sea, making it a very simple polygon there, and put the ocean layer on top of it – saves fiddling with the coast, and also means it works with different resolutions for the coastline. I used to use QGIS's SVG export for a while, but now I find svgis more flexible. A bit more command line, but I like that. Kanguole (talk) 13:04, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for cluing me into svgis, I'm now attempting to whip up a vector map for w:Yuan dynasty using its output—much nicer than the GMT workflow I was using before. Remsense (talk) 09:19, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
