Alternative design

@Evercool1: I noticed you replaced this file with the green and white design. The green and white designs are normally located at a different file name, indicating that the shield adheres to a USDOT interim approval for that design. In this case, that would be File:US Bike 501 (M1-9 IA-15).svg. Could you also include some evidence of that shield being used for USBR 501? As far as USDOT is concerned, the standard shield for USBRs in Maine still needs to be the black and white design. [1] Thanks! Minh Nguyễn ^💬 03:02, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

Let me start this off by saying that I am aware of the federal recognitions regarding the signs. However, it should be noted that while the route in question is unsigned (though it is still possible that it could in the future), the other two routes that exist in Maine are signed with the green signs, most likely without the state getting approval from USDOT; in fact I have images from Google Street View that prove this. [2][3] I visit Maine frequently and I have spotted some of these signs before. I made the edits with the intent of reflecting reality on the ground. Knowing that you brought this issue with the file name up, I am more than happy to revert it back to the older version and reupload the file under correct file name for later use when Maine gets the proper authorization.

@Evercool1: Thanks for the thorough response! The situation in Maine reminds me of what I saw in Ohio: ODOT posted the green-and-white shield two years before getting interim approval. The FHWA website wasn't even updated to reflect that approval until I inquired. As it turns out, FHWA just released a new edition of the MUTCD that officially replaces the black-and-white design with the green-and-white design. It takes effect January 18th. Since templates like w:Module:Road data/strings/USA depend on file name patterns, we'll need to be deliberate about renaming the full set consistently. To avoid confusion, we could take the opportunity to rename all the shields to different patterns, like "USBR 501.svg" and "USBR 501 (2019–2023).svg", but this would be a larger conversation.
