Description
English: The 18thcentury Swedish painter Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller had an international career. After working as a peripatetic artist in France, Italy, Spain and America, he finally settled down in Delaware in the USA. He painted classicist portraits – with distinct outlines and a keen eye for detail – of royalty, aristocrats and friends. During his first visit to the USA the President, George Washington, sat for him in Philadelphia in 1794. This is a replica of that first version, signed in 1795.
