Description
The subject-matter is unusal and disputed In sluijter, Seiffert´s study of the artist it is simply called "landscape with a Nymph" and it has also been entitled "A Scene from the Flood", although there is no such scene in the Biblical account of the Flood. It may show the scene from The Odyssey on which Ulysses is rescued by the goddess Calypso, who has fallen in love with his son Telemachos. However, no comparable rendition of the scene is known in Dutch art. A second versíon of this striking composition was recorded in the Schonborn collection in Vienna 1896 (no.66). Later it was sold in Dresden 1912 (lot 43) but its present whereabouts is unknown. Judging from the buxom female figure, this painting can probably be dated to about 1630. In 1627 Poelenburgh had met Rubens, whose feminiubne ideal was to dominate his painting for a long time thereafter.
